Garden-level carryout on Salem Street
It’s not the best lobster roll (Nepture Oyster wins that) or sushi (hello, Crudo) on their few blocks of Salem Street, but North End Fish & Sushi serves a totally serviceable split-top lobster salad to go. If you’re craving something good and don’t want to wait in line at Pauli’s or spend a mint at Neptune, it’s a great option under $20 in Boston’s North End.
This garden-level spot requires a quick step down to get inside, but follow the low, rustic-tiled ceiling to the counter and choose from a menu of specialty sushi or their popular lobster roll. It’s a solid takeout spot offering something different in the neighborhood and an easy stop just up the road from some of the North End’s more popular dining destinations.

When it’s a nice day in Boston and I’m heading to meet-up with friends on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, I almost always leave my house early to detour into the North End for an, “energy snack.” If you like your socializing with a side of meat, follow my lead and head into Monica’s Mercato on Salem Street. Either keep it simple and pick-up some cured meats and fresh cheese, or order an Italian Sub, one of Boston’s best, sure to temper your appetite for the entire afternoon if you polish it off in its entirety.
Sticking on the sandwich train, Bricco Salumeria is down a little alley off Hanover Street and offers deli sandwiches on just about the freshest bread you can get in all of Boston, baked right next door at their Bricco Panetteria. If you’re feeling indulgent, grab a chicken parmigiana or meatball. Me? I’m always down for their eggplant parmigiana. Offered at so many Italian sub shops, few do an eggplant parm sandwich right. Bricco Salumeria is one of those places. It’s only right to take the gifts this world has given to me.
Caffé Paradiso has been open on Hanover Street since 1962 and is open until 2 am. They have a lengthy cocktail list and full bar, espresso and other necessary caffeine injections, an entire case of pastries, and a cooler of gelato, made on premises, ready to be scooped. While dated in its decor, you won’t mind, this versatile establishment is literally, paradise.
